West Virginia, Mountain Air, text and Images by Lucian Niemeyer. This is a mid-Atlantic book with a broader interest base, as it tells an important American story. Born of traumatic convulsions by the pressure of the African plate, the trauma has continued into our western European settlement of the area. With mountain barriers and river corridors, the land gave up her natural treasures grudgingly. The imported workers and the settlers struggled with the extraction of the resources, while outsiders financed and reaped the rewards. Little capital was kept in the state to build the infrastructure for residents to use. The land, desecrated by the tremendous pressure of extraction of coal, oil, gas and trees, was left ugly and in total despair. The rivers and streams were polluted and filled with the eroded soil. The West Virginian government, beholden to the financiers, did little from the 1700s to the middle of the 20th century, to salve her wounds. The broken land left alone, recovered. From Dolly Sods, used as an almost mile high artillery range to the strip mines which provide coal, nature has recovered the forests, creating a wonderland of beauty. The streams and rivers have recovered, and with few exceptions are quite beautiful, providing wild and wonderful water sports. This is an American story. West Virginia's history has much to teach us. This book should be in bookstores at the end of 2010. The book is being published by Schiffer Publishing.
